SSDPP Cultural Movie Night Kicks-Off the Year with Crash

Release time:2014-10-30   views:

The student-led Cultural Movie Night had its first showing of the academic year on October 23, 2014. First year student Austin Wagner presented Crash (2004), a commentary on race in the urban United States. The movie presented international students with a perspective on the many, often implicit forms racism can take, as told through an all-star cast portraying a series of loosely connected characters in stories filled with humor and drama.

Students delighted in the viewing over food and drink, but also found the experience to be educational. Wagner introduced the movie with a brief history of the modern race struggles in U.S. cities, in particular the 1992 riots in Los Angeles over the police beatings of Rodney King. The film was followed by intense discussions about international students’ personal experiences with racism, from the persisting troubles of race relations in South Africa, to the issues in Europe sparked by immigration within Europe from newly added EU nations.

Cultural movie night will continue to be hosted on Thursdays in room 2026. Students are encouraged not only to join for film-watching and discussion, but also present movies from their own countries and cultures. We hope the success of the first movie night can continue throughout the year!
